Dec 2nd was the day our little STEAM stars had been waiting for a long time and it finally arrived short of disappointments! The event took place at the amazing Nabaki Africa in Mikocheni Dar-es-salaam from 08:00 am to 12:00 am.
The 2 in 1 venue was very large, kids friendly, comfy for the parents and cozy for the kids. It also was properly setup to accommodate the kids making as much of a mess as was necessary for their learning.
The events that took place included:
1.FUN WITH ORIGAMI
The children were very excited as they were given a paper each to ultimately create either a dog or a frog. Apart from the verbal instructions from the facilitator they were provided written instructions on a paper which were easy to understand, short and simple to follow with large pictorial examples which highlighted each step.
They were all excited to witness their masterpieces coming to life after which they proudly covered with their favourite colours and handed their complete projects to the facilitators!
2. LED LIGHTS ADVENTURE
Nothing excites kids more than bright things! In this project the kids made little LED lights glow by using batteries and two pieces of wire. Each was supposed to light up two light bulbs with the intention of making them eyes for their origami animals. The room was filled with excitement every time one of them managed to turn their light bulbs on giving the others more enthusiasm to get theirs up and glowing too
Through this activity the kids learnt about – Electric current, positive and negative terminals and electric circuits.
Finally they all made the eyes of their origami animals glow by placing the glowing led light through little holes that they had poked on the part of the eyes.
3. A TASTE OF ROBOTICS
The little S.T.E.A.M stars got up close and personal with the field of robotics through a jaw dropping display of the mechanism of heat detection by moving a sensor to and from a burning candle. The kids were excited as the alarm went on and were equally as excited when it switched itself off when the volunteer moved the sensor away from the flame.
They also got to a try at a programme which turned a light bulb on and off simply by voice command. They cheered every time the light bulb responded to the commands making them not wanting to stop making commands as a sign of the utmost excitement!
Through this activity the kids learned; The importances and dangers of fire, The advantages of fire alarms and the best locations to place such a device for maximum protection.
4. VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS!
The last activity of the day definitely took the cake! The kids got extremely excited just by the mention of it. It was finally time to finish with a bang as the kids were given tools and ingredients for their final experiment of the day.
In groups of two they were provided with a plain paper, a little bottle, some baking powder and some red food colour. After making a cone shaped mountain out of their papers and colouring them, it was time to mix in all the ingredients to get her with some vinegar to create what they had been waiting for!
Screams filled the space as the kids’ volcanoes started erupting one by one, they shouted for their parents to take photos and video recording of their amazing discovery! Even the youngest ones were successful with very minimal assistance!
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY!
The children had so much fun learning, they made new friends, responded enthusiastically to the activities, they expressed their need to be assisted without holding back, also the older and faster ones helped the younger and less faster ones without being prompted to do so. Most importantly the ones who had an inkling on some activities were more than ready to share their knowledge with the rest.
The parents were eager to get in the process and give a helping hand whenever they could, they got to mingle and exchange ideas with the other parents, they also got to see how their children behaved in the face of challenges and other kids. But most importantly they got to witness the amazing heart warming reactions of their kids as they were in their zone discovering the most amazing wonders of Science Technology Electronics Arts and Mathematics.
The facilitators were very knowledgeable, attentive, extremely friendly with the kids and believe it or not they addressed most of the participants by their first names!
The event was well planned especially as the kids got a break time in the middle when they were provided with some drinks and a snacks to keep them hydrated and their energy levels high. There also was a homework prepared for the kids to finish up at home and of course the amazing inspire science packs were available for grabs!
